We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake. Thoreau

No matter where you may find yourself, or in whatever kind of situation you may find yourself in, your first line of defence is being aware of your surroundings.

Don’t allow yourself to walk around in a mental fog.

Be aware of what is going on around you.

It doesn’t matter if you are out at night in a seedy part of town, or if you are simply shopping for groceries in the middle of the day – be aware of your surroundings.

The unexpected tragedy is never expected, this is why is it called an “unexpected” tragedy.

You never know when your path will cross paths with someone with less than honourable intentions.

No one ever expects to find themselves face to face with someone who is mentally unbalanced and wielding a gun in the grocery store or
 the department store,
yet each year the media covers just this type of thing happening to unsuspecting citizens.
These law abiding people are just going about their business when they are surprised by someone blasting away, randomly shooting whomever happens to be caught in the crosshairs.

This is why awareness is so important.

You just never know when something like that will happen, but you have a much greater chance of surviving if you remain aware.

This doesn’t mean that you should walk around scared or in a constant state of fear, but only that you are aware of your surroundings when you are away from home.

It is dangerous to walk around oblivious to your surroundings.
Engage your mind.
Don’t be mentally lazy.
Stay sharp.
