The Question is- do individuals grow fonder of each other as
they are physically separated?
Yes it makes a difference but based on perspective, the
bond can be as strong but a very different feeling maybe even connects to
separate chakras...fills different voids in our life.
Maybe that’s why monks teach total observance only...no connection.

It depends on what the platonic friendships are built upon.
If it's friendships for just hanging out and having fun time together then
eventually they/ we find new friends as distance separates them.
If its friendships build on intellectual, spiritual
interests then these can deepen via distance as each friend experience new
challenges and lessons with the new geography and they/ we will share these
across the miles.
Particularly with today's technology, it's instantaneous! Consider friendships of this nature build on face book!
Many of whom we never met in real life before, yet these bonds are often inexplicably stronger than most friendships we have in real life based on the rare power of synergism via similar interests and overlap of experiences.
